The decision in one minute

Beyond the highlight reel — the traits, habits and intangibles D-I coaches actually prioritize when evaluating players.

Key questions to answer first

  1. 1How does the player look between the whistles, not just on the highlight clip?
  2. 2How does the player respond to adversity in a game?
  3. 3What do coaches and teachers say about character?

Factors that actually matter

  • Skating

Non-negotiable at every level above youth.

  • Hockey IQ

    Reads, anticipation, positioning.

  • Compete level

    Battles, second efforts, shift quality.

  • Character

How the player treats teammates, coaches and officials.

  • Academic fit

    Grades, test scores and trajectory.

Green flags

  • Player improves visibly every season.
  • Plays the same way up 3-0 and down 3-0.
  • Coaches outside the family advocate without being asked.

Red flags

  • Highlight reel dependent on one or two moments.
  • Body language drops when the player is not on the score sheet.
  • Academic file requires major last-minute repair.

Common mistakes

  • Believing points alone drive recruiting.
  • Over-engineering highlight tapes.
  • Ignoring the character file coaches build behind the scenes.

Action steps

  1. 1Ask a trusted outside coach for an honest evaluation.
  2. 2Film full periods, not just clips.
  3. 3Build academic habits early — they show up in recruiting conversations.
